if you don't put your tools away

Crockett says, "if you don't put your tools away, you tend to accumulate numerous, unnecessary hammers."

I thought of this in the garage today. Certainly this is a metaphor for something. Intellectually lazy thinking, maybe? Self-defeating behavior?
